Okay, bear with me on this one. It was a real challenge to AOI this. But, before we get into this, I would love some feedback. What parts of AOI do you love, skip, skim? In 2015, Future was in a storm. He had just split from Ciara, was embroiled in custody drama, and had gone from chart-friendly hits to a darker, more insular sound. Instead of polishing up for radio, he doubled down on the mud: DS2 (Dirty Sprite 2) is equal parts club banger and stream of consciousness diary entries, if the diary was soaked in codeine and ditched in the corner of a recording studio.

Metro Boomin’s production is lush but swampy; 808s that don’t punch so much as rumble through your car, keys that feel like you are walking up to a boss battle with King Boo. Future, meanwhile, is both the (Mario) party host and the ghost haunting the room. He flexes about watches and women, but his delivery is slurred, as if each boast is immediately undercut by the hangover that’s waiting on the other side.

I am locked in right now. I just pumped out like three AOIs today. Mom and friends, maybe skip this one and wait for next week for an easier listen.

It deserved a Grammy.
